Lock down Netflix for kids. Profile by profile.
Netflix's parental controls are better than most streaming services and switched off by default. Ten minutes gets you a properly locked setup — the important part being that the adult profiles need locking too.
Step 1: A dedicated kids profile
- Sign in on a browser at netflix.com.
- Manage Profiles → Add Profile.
- Name it, and tick Kids for a simplified interface with only age-appropriate titles.
- Save.
The Kids experience limits browsing to titles at or below the chosen maturity level and removes most of the adult interface.
Step 2: Set the maturity rating per profile
- Account → Profile & Parental Controls → select the profile.
- Viewing Restrictions → enter your account password.
- Set the maximum maturity rating.
- Save.
Ratings vary by country — G/PG/PG-13/R in the US, U/PG/12/15/18 in the UK, and so on.
Step 3: Block specific titles
On the same Viewing Restrictions screen there's a title search box. Anything you add there is hidden from that profile regardless of its rating — useful for a show that's technically age-appropriate but wrong for your particular child.
Step 4: Lock the adult profiles (the step everyone skips)
A kids profile achieves nothing if your child can tap your profile on the way in.
- Account → Profile & Parental Controls → select your profile.
- Profile Lock → enter your password.
- Tick Require a PIN and set a 4-digit code.
- Repeat for every adult profile on the account.

- Account → Profile & Parental Controls → kids profile.
- Playback settings.
- Untick Autoplay next episode and Autoplay previews.
This is a small setting with a large effect on how long a session lasts. Countdown-to-next-episode is the streaming equivalent of an infinite feed.
Step 6: Check what's already been watched
Account → profile → Viewing activity shows every title watched on that profile. It's the fastest way to find out whether the controls were needed sooner than you thought.
Every streaming service does this differently and none of them share settings. Disney+, Prime Video, Max, Hulu, and YouTube each need their own profile locks and maturity ratings. Set a calendar reminder to work through them in one sitting rather than discovering them one incident at a time.
Sign out of everything, once
If Netflix is signed in on an old tablet, a friend's console, or a device you've forgotten about, your profile locks don't apply to sessions already open. Go to Account → Sign out of all devices, then sign back in where you need it. Do this after setting the PINs, not before.
Frequently asked questions
Can my child change the maturity rating themselves?
Only with your Netflix account password — rating changes require it. Which is why the account password shouldn't be one your child knows or can guess.
Does the Kids profile block everything inappropriate?
It filters by maturity rating, which is a blunt instrument. Ratings don't capture everything a particular family cares about, so use the blocked-titles list for specifics.
Do profile locks work on smart TVs and consoles?
Yes — profile PINs apply on every device, including TVs, consoles, and streaming sticks. Sign out of all devices once after setting them up.
What about downloads already on the device?
Downloaded titles stay watchable until removed. Check the Downloads section of the app on your child's device after changing restrictions.
