Block Reddit. All of its front doors.

Defenras UPDATED AUGUST 2026 6 MIN READ

Reddit is where a lot of parents discover the limits of app-based blocking. It has more entry points than almost any other platform, and the age verification is a button that says 'Yes, I am over 18'.

Why Reddit is harder than it looks

Blocking "reddit.com" and considering it handled is the standard mistake.

iPhone

The app

  1. Screen TimeContent & Privacy RestrictionsContent RestrictionsApps.
  2. Set the age rating to 12+ — Reddit is rated 17+, so this removes it and blocks reinstalling.

The websites

  1. Content RestrictionsWeb ContentLimit Adult Websites.
  2. Under Never Allow, add each of: reddit.com, old.reddit.com, np.reddit.com, redd.it.

Android

  1. Defenras App Blocker → select Reddit and any third-party Reddit clients installed.
  2. Turn on uninstall protection.
  3. Turn off Install unknown apps for browsers and file managers so a client can't be sideloaded.
  4. Confirm the Reddit domains are covered by your blocklist.

Every Reddit domain, one toggle

Defenras blocks reddit.com, old.reddit.com, redd.it, and the mobile apps together — no domain list to maintain.

If you'd rather limit than block

Reddit isn't only NSFW content — there are genuinely good communities for hobbies, homework help, and specific interests. If a total block feels disproportionate for your teenager:

  1. Create the account together and set a real birth year. An under-18 account has NSFW content off and it can't be toggled on.
  2. SettingsAccount Settings → confirm Show mature (18+) content is off.
  3. Turn off chat requests under Settings → Chat → who can send you chat requests → Nobody. Unsolicited Reddit DMs are a common grooming route.
  4. Keep DNS-level filtering on so the adult subdomains are blocked regardless of account settings.

The account-based approach only holds if your child stays logged in — logging out returns them to the one-tap age gate. Which is why the filtering layer stays on either way.

THE SPECIFIC CONCERN

Beyond adult content, Reddit hosts active communities organised around self-harm, disordered eating, and drug acquisition. These are frequently framed as support spaces and are not always removed. If your child is struggling with any of these, Reddit is a place where that struggle can be actively reinforced by a community. That's a different and more serious risk than exposure to explicit content.

Checklist

  1. App blocked or age rating set to 12+.
  2. All Reddit domains blocked, not just reddit.com.
  3. Third-party clients blocked; sideloading disabled.
  4. If allowed: real birth year, mature content off, chat requests off.
  5. DNS filtering active as the layer that catches the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Does Reddit have parental controls?

No parent-facing controls. There are account settings that hide mature content, but they're controlled by the account holder — your child — and reset by logging out.

Can my child see NSFW content without an account?

Yes. The age gate is a self-declaration button with no verification, so a logged-out user reaches adult subreddits directly.

What about Reddit mirror sites?

Alternative front-ends serve Reddit content from other domains. A maintained blocklist that tracks these is the practical answer; a hand-written domain list won't keep up.

Is Reddit worse than other social media for kids?

Different, not uniformly worse. Less algorithmic pull than TikTok, far more adult content and far more communities organised around harmful behaviour.

Defenras blocks all of this — without collecting your child's data.

One app, every device, every browser. Adult content, gambling, vaping, scams, malware, social media — all blocked. PIN-locked. Free version available, no credit card.
