Steam parental controls. Family View, properly set up.

Steam is a storefront with an age gate you click through, an active chat system, and a catalogue that includes explicitly adult titles. Family View is genuinely good and switched off by default.

What Steam Family View does

Family View puts a PIN on the parts of Steam you choose to restrict — the store, the community, friends, chat — leaving a whitelisted set of games playable without it.

Setting it up

1. Open the Steam client and sign in to the account your child uses.
2. Steam menu → Settings → Family.
3. Click Manage Family View.
4. Tick only the features your child should reach without a PIN. We'd suggest starting with the library alone.
5. Select which installed games are allowed.
6. Set a PIN that isn't the Windows password or a family birthday.
7. Confirm via the email Steam sends.

What to leave unticked

• The Steam Store — otherwise purchases and adult titles are one click away
• Community-generated content — Workshop mods are unmoderated and some are explicitly adult
• Friends, chat, and groups — this is the stranger-contact surface
• Online profiles and user-generated screenshots

Steam Families (the newer system)

Steam Families lets a household share a library and gives adults some oversight of a child account, including purchase requests that come to a parent for approval. If your child has their own Steam account, this is the better structure than one shared login — it separates their library from yours and gives you the approval flow.

Adult content settings

Steam allows adult titles to be hidden entirely at the account level:

1. Go to Store → Preferences in the Steam client, or store preferences on the website.
2. Under Mature Content, untick everything.
3. Turn off Show adult-only sexual content.

This is an account setting your child can reverse unless the store itself is behind Family View — which is the argument for locking the store.

The chat problem

Steam chat and voice connect your child to strangers met in multiplayer games. Grooming approaches through game chat are common and generally follow the same pattern: friendly regular contact in-game, then a move to Discord, then to a private platform.

If you leave friends and chat enabled:

• Set profile visibility to Friends Only under Profile → Edit Profile → Privacy Settings.
• Set Game details and Friends list to Private.
• Turn off comments on the profile.
• Talk about the rule: no adding people they haven't met in real life, no moving conversations to another platform.

Beyond Steam

Steam's controls only govern Steam. A PC has other routes:

• Other launchers — Epic, GOG, Battle.net each need their own settings.
• Browser games and mod sites — outside any launcher's reach; handled by DNS filtering.
• Pirated game sites — a major malware vector and a common one for teenagers avoiding purchase approval.
• Adult game platforms like itch.io's adult section, which have no meaningful age gate.
