Defenras vs Screen Time. The gaps that matter.
Apple Screen Time is free, deeply integrated, and better than most parents realise. It also has four specific gaps, and knowing what they are matters more than picking a side.
What Screen Time does well
- Downtime — a scheduled window where only allowed apps work. Genuinely effective.
- App Limits by category — cap Social or Games as a group rather than app by app.
- Communication Limits — control who your child can contact during Downtime, which no third-party tool can replicate because it needs OS-level access.
- Allowed Websites Only — a true allowlist. For young children this is the strongest content control available on any platform.
- Ask to Buy — purchase and download approval through Family Sharing.
- Usage reporting — detailed, per-app, and accurate.
For a child under about eight, Screen Time with Allowed Websites Only and a locked passcode is a genuinely strong setup that costs nothing.
The four gaps
1. "Limit Adult Websites" is a heuristic
It reliably catches large mainstream adult sites and reliably misses smaller ones, mirrors, newly registered domains, and content hosted inside other platforms. It's a filter, not a wall.
2. In-app browsers
A link tapped inside a social app opens a browser view inside that app. Depending on how it's implemented, Screen Time's web restrictions may not apply. This is a substantial route around an otherwise careful setup.
3. No category blocking beyond adult content
Screen Time has one content category. It doesn't have separate controls for gambling, vaping and nicotine retail, scam and phishing sites, self-harm content, or anonymous chat apps. You can add domains manually to Never Allow — but maintaining a real blocklist by hand isn't feasible.
4. Apple-only
If your household has an Android phone, a Windows laptop, or a Chromebook, Screen Time covers none of it.

Our actual recommendation
Use both. They do different jobs and the combination is stronger than either.
- Screen Time for Downtime, app limits, communication limits, and purchase approval. Nothing third-party can match its OS-level integration.
- Defenras for content filtering across every browser and category, and for coverage on the non-Apple devices in the house.
Set a Screen Time passcode that isn't the device unlock code, and attach a recovery Apple ID to it. An enormous number of Screen Time setups fail for one of two reasons: no passcode at all, or a passcode the parent later forgets and resolves by switching the whole thing off. Both are avoidable in two minutes.
What we don't do
Screen Time's usage reporting is detailed and Defenras deliberately has none — we don't collect what your child browsed, so we can't report it. If per-app activity reporting is what you're after, Screen Time does it well, it's free, and we don't compete with it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Apple Screen Time enough on its own?
For a young child with Allowed Websites Only and a locked passcode, it's strong. Its weak points are heuristic adult filtering, no other content categories, and Apple-only coverage.
Does Defenras replace Screen Time?
No, and we wouldn't suggest it. Screen Time's Downtime and communication limits use OS-level access no third-party app has. Run both.
Why doesn't Defenras show usage reports?
Because generating them requires collecting your child's browsing activity. We chose not to hold that data. It's a real trade-off and Screen Time is the better choice if reporting matters to you.
Will running both cause conflicts?
No. Screen Time governs apps and time; Defenras filters DNS. Different layers, no interference.
