First phone safety checklist — set up Defenras in 5 minutes.
Your child just got their first phone — or is about to. This is your complete safety setup using Defenras. Print it. Work through it the day the phone arrives.
The first phone is a milestone for kids and a stress event for parents. Most parents handle the technical setup poorly — installing one app, calling it done, and being surprised when problems appear later.
The right setup takes 5 minutes with Defenras. Here's the complete checklist.
Before the phone arrives
Decide which apps come pre-installed
Don't hand your child a phone and negotiate apps later. Decide in advance.
Reasonable defaults for an 11-year-old's first phone:
- Phone, Messages (family contacts only)
- Maps
- Camera, Photos
- Calculator, Calendar, Clock
- One game (if applicable)
- Defenras (for safety)
- No social media
- No YouTube
Write down the rules in advance
- "Phone stays in the kitchen at night."
- "No phones at the dinner table."
- "Phones off 1 hour before bed."
- "If a stranger contacts you, you tell me immediately."
- "I have the right to look at your phone any time."
The single most important app to install on a first phone
Defenras blocks adult content, gambling, vape, scams, predator-linked sites, and AI companion apps — across every browser and every app. Free version available.

- Set a parent PIN your child won't be able to guess
- Set up the emergency panic button — add your phone number as the guardian contact
- Test it — open Safari and try to visit a known adult site. You should see a Defenras block page.
Android setup
- Download Defenras from Google Play
- Open Defenras and tap "Setup Protection"
- Approve the VPN permission when Android prompts
- Set a parent PIN
- Open App Blocker and lock the apps you don't want your child using (TikTok, Snapchat, Discord, etc.)

The conversation (on day one, before they touch the phone)
Sit down with your child. Cover this calmly:
1. "This phone is a tool, not a reward"
Phones are utilities. They're not status symbols. They're not earned forever.
2. "The rules"
Read out the rules you wrote. Talk about the WHY behind each.
3. "I will look at your phone"
This isn't surveillance. It's a baseline. You're occasionally checking in.
4. "Strangers — what to do"
"If anyone you don't know contacts you, you tell me. I won't be angry. We figure it out together."
5. "Mistakes — what to do"
"You will mess up. You'll send something you regret. You'll click something stupid. When that happens, you come to me. No punishment for telling me — only for hiding it."
6. "How the panic button works"
Show your child where the Defenras panic button is and how to use it. Practice once together. "If you ever need me right now, one tap and I'll know exactly where you are."
Most parents install multiple apps to do what Defenras does in one. Content blocking, app blocking, panic button, GPS, scheduled lock windows — all in one app. PIN-locked so your kid can't disable it. Zero data collected. Free version available.
The first 30 days
- Check in every few days. "How's it going? Any weird DMs? Anything I should know?"
- Look at the phone together once a week. Make this normal.
- Adjust rules based on what's working.
- Don't be the parent who installed parental controls and forgot.
Common mistakes to avoid
Mistake 1: Letting the kid set it up
You're the parent. You set up the controls. Your kid will be fine.
Mistake 2: Setting up controls but not having the conversation
Controls block content. Conversations build the relationship that matters when controls eventually fail.
Mistake 3: Installing 5 different "safety" apps
Most parents install Screen Time + Family Link + a parental control app + a location tracker. Defenras does all of it in one app — including content blocking, app blocking, panic button, and GPS.
Mistake 4: Forgetting to update as they age
The setup that's right at 11 isn't right at 14. Revisit every 6-12 months.
The bottom line
The first phone setup takes 5 minutes with Defenras: install, set PIN, lock concerning apps, set up panic button, have the conversation. That's the whole job. Then check in regularly.
Defenras blocks all of this — without collecting your child's data.
One app, every device, every browser. Adult content, gambling, vaping, scams, malware, social media — all blocked. PIN-locked. Free version available, no credit card.
