Free Robux doesn't exist. Here's what does.

Scams aimed at children have moved from generic phishing to something much better targeted: they use the right game vocabulary, they arrive from what looks like a peer, and they exploit a specific pressure — wanting an item everyone else already has.

The four scams that account for most of it

1. Currency generators

"Free Robux," "V-Bucks generator," "unlimited Minecoins." The site shows a fake progress bar, then asks for the account login to "deliver" the currency, or for a "human verification" step that installs adware.

What actually happens: the account is stolen, stripped of items, and resold. If a payment method is attached, it gets used.

The one rule: no legitimate game currency is ever free from a third-party site. Not sometimes. Ever.

2. Trading and middleman scams

Common in Roblox and games with item economies. Variants:

• Fake middleman. Both parties send items to a "trusted" third party who disappears.
• Trade-then-refund. The scammer pays, receives the item, then charges back.
• Fake trade windows. A convincing screenshot or an overlay that isn't the real interface.
• "I'll go first" reversal. Builds trust over several small trades before the large one.

3. Account phishing through the game itself

A message inside the game or on Discord: "Your account has been reported, verify here to avoid a ban." The link goes to a pixel-perfect copy of the login page.

The urgency and the ban threat are the mechanism — a child who thinks they're about to lose years of progress doesn't inspect the URL.

4. Crypto and investment pitches

Increasingly aimed at teenagers through Discord, TikTok, and YouTube: "turn $50 into $500," NFT projects, trading signal groups. Often promoted by creators the child already follows, which removes the stranger-danger instinct entirely.

Protecting the accounts

1. Two-factor authentication on everything. Roblox, Epic, Microsoft, Steam, Google, Apple. This single step defeats most credential theft even if the password is captured.
2. Unique passwords per account. A password manager makes this realistic for a child; reused passwords mean one phish compromises everything.
3. No stored payment method on a child's game account. Gift-card balance caps the loss.
4. Roblox account PIN — Settings → Security → Account PIN, so settings can't be changed.
5. Email you control as the recovery address on every game account. This is what lets you recover a stolen account.

Teaching the pattern rather than the list

New scams appear constantly; the structure doesn't change. Three things that generalise:

• Urgency is the tell. "Right now," "expires in 10 minutes," "you'll be banned." Real systems don't work that way. Anything urgent is a reason to stop, not to hurry.
• Nobody legitimate needs your password. Not a moderator, not support, not a friend, not a giveaway. Ever, under any circumstances.
• Free things aren't. If it costs real money in the game and someone's offering it free, you're the product.

If it's already happened

1. Change the password immediately — from a different device if possible — and enable 2FA.
2. Change the email password too if the same one was used anywhere.
3. Contact platform support. Roblox, Epic, and Steam all have account-recovery processes and they do work.
4. Check for charges and dispute unauthorised ones through the store or your bank.
5. Check other accounts using the same password.
