What actually works with teenagers on this
Vaping is one of the areas where the standard approach demonstrably fails. What's more effective:
- Lead with addiction, not health. "It'll damage your lungs in thirty years" is abstract to a 15-year-old. "A disposable can hold more nicotine than a pack of cigarettes, and it's designed so you can't stop" is concrete and lands.
- Name the marketing. Teenagers strongly dislike being manipulated. Showing them that flavours, colours, and creator promotion are deliberately aimed at their age group produces a better reaction than a health lecture.
- Address the actual reason. Most teen vaping is anxiety management or social belonging. If it's anxiety, the vape is a symptom and removing it without addressing the anxiety doesn't work.
- Don't lead with punishment for disclosure. A teenager who is already addicted needs help quitting, and they won't ask for it if asking costs them.
Nicotine dependence in adolescents is real and quitting is genuinely hard — harder than adults tend to assume, because the adolescent brain forms dependence faster.
