How sextortion typically unfolds

2. Rapport-building. Conversation for hours or days. Flirty, friendly, "I'm into you."
3. Image exchange. Predator sends a (fake or stolen) intimate image, then asks for one in return.
4. The threat. Within minutes of receiving the image: "I have your image. Pay me $500 or I send it to your followers, your parents, your school."
5. Escalation. If the teen pays, demands continue. If they refuse, the predator may send the image to a few contacts to prove the threat.

The entire cycle plays out in 12-24 hours. The teen feels trapped and ashamed.

The platforms predators use

Sextortion almost always starts on one of these platforms. Blocking or restricting them dramatically reduces your child's exposure:

• Instagram — DMs from strangers, often posing as peers
• Snapchat — "disappearing" images that don't actually disappear
• Discord — DMs from server members, voice chat that becomes inappropriate
• Anonymous chat apps (Monkey, Wink, others) — random pairing with strangers
• AI companion apps — increasingly used to lure teens into "private" conversations
• Roblox and gaming voice chats — grooming starts in-game, moves to other platforms
