Screen Time alternatives. Add, don't replace.
We sell an iOS product and we will still tell you this: nothing replaces Apple Screen Time for app limits on an iPhone, including us. Apple does not give third-party developers the APIs that would make it possible. What Screen Time is weak at is something else entirely, and that is worth fixing separately.
Where Screen Time is unbeatable
App time limits, downtime schedules, communication limits, purchase approval. Free, built in, and operating at a level of the system no outside app is permitted to reach.
If you are searching for an alternative because you want better app limits, there isn’t one. That is not modesty — it is the API situation.
Where it genuinely falls short
Web filtering only really works in Safari
“Limit Adult Websites” is a Safari feature. Install Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or open a link inside TikTok, Instagram or any app with a built-in browser, and the restriction largely does not apply.
This is the single most common reason parents think Screen Time “stopped working”. It did not — it was never covering those surfaces.
The fix is a DNS-level filter, which works below the browser and therefore applies to every app:
- Defenras — blocks harmful domains across every app, on mobile data as well as Wi-Fi, with no browsing record created.
- NextDNS — cheaper and configurable; note the profile can be removed from Settings in seconds.
- Cloudflare 1.1.1.3 — free, home network only.
Worth being straight about one thing: on iOS, all of these — ours included — are delivered as a DNS configuration profile, because Apple permits no other route. Any of them can be deleted in Settings by someone holding the phone.
Close the Safari-only gap
Defenras filters content across every browser and app on iOS, not just Safari. Free tier, no card.
Get Defenras free →Children work out the passcode, or the reset
Screen Time’s passcode is widely documented as bypassable, and the recovery paths are easy to find. It was built as a self-control and young-child tool rather than an adversarial one.
If your child is actively defeating it, a second layer helps — particularly one that alerts you when it is removed, which Screen Time does not.
It stops at the Apple ecosystem
An Android phone, a Windows laptop or a Chromebook is simply outside it. Mixed households need either a second free tool (Google Family Link on Android) or one cross-platform product (Qustodio, Mobicip).
The comparison
| Option | Fixes | Does not fix |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Screen Time | App limits, downtime, purchases | Filtering outside Safari; determined bypass |
| Screen Time + a DNS filter | Content across every app and browser | Message and contact risks |
| Qustodio / Mobicip | One dashboard across iOS, Android and laptops | Weaker app control than Screen Time on iOS |
| Bark | Contact risk in messages and social accounts | It is monitoring, not blocking |
| Canopy | Image-level filtering and sexting detection | Narrower than a general filter |
The honest recommendation
Keep Screen Time. Add a filter for the Safari-only gap. That is free-plus-small and it covers more than any single paid product covers alone.
Replace it only if you are leaving the Apple ecosystem, or if what you actually need is monitoring rather than control — which is a different product and a different decision.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Apple Screen Time?
For app limits on iOS, there is no better alternative — Apple does not give third-party developers the necessary APIs. The useful move is to add a DNS-level content filter such as Defenras, NextDNS or Cloudflare 1.1.1.3 to cover the browsers and in-app browsers Screen Time does not reach.
Why does Screen Time not block websites in Chrome?
Its 'Limit Adult Websites' setting is a Safari feature. Other browsers, and the browsers built into apps like TikTok and Instagram, are largely outside it. A DNS-level filter works below the browser, so it applies to every app on the device.
Can kids bypass Apple Screen Time?
Often, yes. The passcode is widely documented as bypassable and the recovery routes are easy to find. It was designed for self-control and younger children rather than for a child actively trying to defeat it.
Do I need a parental control app if I use Screen Time?
Only for the gaps. Screen Time handles app limits and downtime well. If you also need content filtering that covers every browser and app, or an alert when protection is removed, a filter alongside it is the usual answer — not a replacement.
Defenras blocks all of this — without collecting your child's data.
One app, every device, every browser. Adult content, gambling, vaping, scams, malware, social media — all blocked. PIN-locked. Free version available, no credit card.
