Block Telegram. App and web, both.

Telegram deserves more parental attention than it gets. It's positioned as a messaging app, but the public channel system functions as an unmoderated distribution network — and kids find it through other apps, not by searching for it.

Why Telegram specifically

Telegram's design choices, taken together, make it a poor fit for children:

• Public channels with unlimited members. Channels broadcast to hundreds of thousands of subscribers with far less moderation than mainstream platforms.
• Content that other platforms remove ends up here. Extreme material, pirated content, drug markets, and stolen-image trading all persist on Telegram long after removal elsewhere.
• Search by username. Anyone can be found and messaged by username without a mutual connection.
• Nearby People. A location-based discovery feature that surfaces strangers in physical proximity.
• Secret chats. End-to-end encrypted, self-destructing, and excluded from cloud backups.
• Full-featured web version. web.telegram.org works in any browser, so blocking the app alone accomplishes very little.

Block Telegram on iPhone

The app

1. Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit.
2. Tap Social, then the category name, then select Telegram only.
3. Set the limit to 1 minute and turn on Block at End of Limit.
4. Then Content & Privacy Restrictions → iTunes & App Store Purchases → Installing Apps → Don't Allow, so it can't be reinstalled.

The website

1. Content Restrictions → Web Content → Limit Adult Websites.
2. Under Never Allow, add telegram.org, web.telegram.org, and t.me.

That third one matters: t.me is the short-link domain, and it's how nearly every Telegram invite reaches a child in the first place. Blocking telegram.org alone leaves the invite links working.

Block Telegram on Android

1. Install Defenras and grant the Accessibility permission.
2. Open App Blocker and select Telegram.
3. Turn on uninstall protection so the blocker can't be removed.
4. Confirm the messaging category is enabled in your blocklist so the web version is covered too.

Via Family Link: child's profile → Controls → App limits → Telegram → Block. Remember this lapses when your child turns 13.

The one-step version

Before you block: the conversation

Telegram is unusual in that it's often adopted for a specific reason — a gaming clan, a school group chat that migrated, a fandom community. Blocking it without asking why it's installed tends to move the activity to a platform you don't know about rather than ending it.

Worth asking:

• Who suggested Telegram, and what's it being used for?
• Are any of these channels or groups with people they've never met in person?
• Has anyone messaged them out of the blue?
